What We Do
Village12 provides people the tools, materials and education needed to be self-sufficient.
Our first community is the Middle Batey in Muñoz, Dominican Republic. This batey, or sugarcane workers camp, is home to an estimated 600 Haitian people, many of whom have no identification papers, are uneducated and unemployed. Since January 2012, Village12 Volunteers have been working with residents on projects like making a business directory to sell local products and offering small business training courses, building a septic tank, performing a medical triage and providing transportation to the hospital in town, teaching women’s health and sex education and doing activities with children.
Our program structure is designed to help the Middle Batey become self-sufficient in good time, on a razor-thin budget and in collaboration with community leaders. Our strategy can be divided into 3 parts:
